JAKARTA – After 18 years, the story of Neo and Trinity is back at the end of 2021 with a movie The Matrix Resurrections. As a continuation of one of the classic film series of the late 90s, Resurrections comes with various familiar elements and of course the typical slow-motion scene.

In 2003, the main trilogy of The Matrix was temporarily closed with the film The Matrix Revolutions. At the end of this third film, Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) are told to sacrifice themselves to destroy the power of the machines that trap humanity in the simulation.

However, in 2021, Lana Wachowski decided to return Neo and Trinity in a sequel story called The Matrix Resurrections. As the title suggests, ‘resurrections’, this film is about the rebirth of Neo as well as the rebirth of the beloved franchise of film lovers.

Even though he was thought to have died in the third film, apparently Neo was successfully revived by the machines and had to be trapped again in a boring and redundant simulation life. The difference is, instead of returning to being a hacker by the name of Thomas Anderson, this time Neo gets a role as the creator of a video game called The Matrix; a sadistic irony created by machines that turns Neo’s real experience into pure entertainment.

As a franchise that is loved by many, of course, this sequel film contains many familiar scenes that trigger sweet memories. Taking it a step further to create a nostalgic atmosphere, Resurrections even uses scenes from its three predecessors to drive the story; motivates Neo to recall his experiences two decades ago.

Like sequels and soft reboots, fans of the original The Matrix trilogy are guaranteed to love Neo’s adventures this time around. Although it feels like a repetition without meaning on the surface, the action scenes full of slow-mo moments and bullet time typical of The Matrix certainly manage to pay off any longing for 90s-style special effects that are rarely applied on the big screen.

Unfortunately, this film is very difficult for new fans to enjoy. With many old characters appearing, as well as various repetitions of themes from previous films, Resurrections creates an invisible fence that prevents the general audience from understanding what conflict Lana Wachowski is really bringing.

The ending of the film, which feels bland and inconclusive, becomes a part that is quite disturbing when leaving the cinema. However, on the plus side, this unpleasant ending could be a gateway for the next sequel if the director and Warner Bros. willed.

Having many similarities with the old trilogy, one thing that makes Resurrections different is the colors that are now brighter and more varied. Although still playing in the dark and in the rain, Resurrections seems to have removed the green filter that managed to make the previous Matrix films look ‘dream-like’ or like a dream.

Broadly speaking, the film The Matrix Resurrections is a film that is quite satisfying for old fans but less friendly for new audiences. For newbies who want to fully experience Neo’s struggles, it’s better to watch The Matrix original trilogy before watching Resurrections; however, don’t be surprised to see the difference in the quality of the special effects, considering this sequel is 18 years apart from the previous film.

Again starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, and featuring Jessica Henwick and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the film The Matrix Resurrections can be seen as of December 22, 2021 in theaters.
