The double anniversary that Queen Elizabeth celebrates on Christmas day

The Queen Elizabeth, 96 in April, has a double reason to celebrate December 25th. Although the Christmas holidays just passed were the saddest of her life for the death of her beloved Philip, to whom she dedicated the year-end speech, the longest-lived sovereign in the United Kingdom celebrated a double recurrence on Christmas day.

For the royal family December 25th doesn’t just mean stuffed turkey, savory pies and homemade gingerbread cookies. On that same day is the birthday of a close relative and a trusted friend of the Queen Elizabeth. We are talking about the first cousin princess Alexandra Helen Elizabeth Olga Christabel of Kent, born on 25 December 1936 to Prince George, Duke of Kent, and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. Coincidentally, the princess was born on the same day as her aunt Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, who in fact, like her niece, was called by second name Christabel.

Who is Princess Alexandra of Kent

Second of three children – her older brother, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, was born in 1935 and her younger brother, Prince Michael of Kent, in 1942 -, Alexandra was born in London, but spent most of her childhood in the family’s country house at Coppins in Buckinghamshire. In the royal family she was a true pioneer as she was the first princess to attend boarding school at Heathfield School in Windsor, before going to study in Paris.

Orphaned by her father at the age of 7 after Prince George died in a plane crash in Scotland on 25 August 1942, the Princess Alexandra he concentrated on his studies and also trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital. On April 24, 1963, she married Sir Angus James Bruce Ogilvy in Westminster Abbey. Several members of the royal family attended the ceremony, followed by about 200,000 people.

Their union gave birth to their children James and Marina, and four grandchildren: Flora Alexandra Vesterberg and Alexander Charles Ogilvy, respectively in 1994 and 1996, and Zenouska May Mowatt and Christian Alexander Mowatt, in 1990 and 1993.

The friendship between Queen Elizabeth and Princess Alexandra

The day of Christmas the Queen Elizabeth celebrate with pleasure the princess birthday to which it is very attached. Over the years Alexandra has always stood out for her tireless commitment to hundreds of charities such as Independent Age, Sightsavers, Florence Nightingale Foundation and Nature in Art Trust, which continued even after 2004, the year of her husband’s death. In the recent documentary Princess Alexandra: The Queen’s Confidantroyal expert Hugo Vickers said, “The most successful members of the family are those who don’t compete with the queen but who support her, and she definitely falls into that category.”
