Rome candidate to host Expo 2030, Gualtieri “It’s the ideal place”

The race towards Expo 2030 begins. It was Rome’s candidacy officially presented for the 2030 world exhibition in front of the General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (Bie) in the presence of the Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, of the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri, the president of the nomination committee Giampiero Massolo, and the general director of the committee Giuseppe Scognamiglio. Thus begins today the campaign towards the assignment. There are contending for the event with the capital of Italy four challengers: Moscow (Russia), Busan (South Korea), Odessa (Ukraine) and (Saudi Arabia).

For the mayor Gualtieri “Rome is the ideal place” for Expo 2030 for “five reasons: Rome is a unique city that shows its history of thousands of years”, here “you can observe how the relationships between peoples and their territories have evolved over the centuries”; “It is the city with the largest green belt in the world”; “It is a bastion of culture and science”; “It is traditionally an open and inclusive city”; finally, the Jubilee of 2025 “will send a powerful message of inclusion, solidarity and hope,” said Gualtieri.

Rome, the eternal city, crossroads of the world and of history, has always connected Europe, Africa and the Middle East and is constantly evolving as evidenced by the millennial stratifications of its archaeological and artistic heritage: for this reason it is the ideal candidate, according to the Italian government, to host the 2030 edition of the Expo with the project entitled “People and territories: urban regeneration, inclusion and innovation”. To announce the candidacy Di Maio what he said: “15 years after Expo Milano, the Italian government, in partnership with the Municipality of Rome, its citizens, local authorities and the country as a whole, today presents its candidacy to host the 2030 World Exhibition in Rome, the city Eternal, from 25 April to 25 October“. «Today, 170 countries are part of the Bureau, sharing the mission of exhibiting and disseminating the tools at our disposal to respond to the needs of civilization and to overcome the challenges of the future. This noble mission deserves our full and constant commitment ”, continued the head of the Farnesina, recalling that Italy is among the eleven founding countries of the Bureau.

The process now envisages that six months after the submission of the application letter (which took place in October), the examination phase of the project begins, with the BIE ‘Inquiry Missions’ called to examine the detailed dossiers of each candidate and evaluate their feasibility. The host country of the World Expo 2030 is then elected by the member states of the BIE (169) gathered in a General Assembly, on the basis of the principle of one country, one vote. Two-thirds of the votes in the first round are required to win the award. If no candidate gets them, the last one is eliminated and so on until there are only two candidates left. At that point, the one who wins the simple majority wins.
