Viasat World signs deal with long-time partner ZDF Enterprises

Viasat World has signed a new deal with its long-standing global content distribution partner ZDF Enterprises.

The agreement secures rights for 18 factual titles totaling 49 hours of content that will air on Viasat History or Viasat Nature in the coming months across Baltics, Scandinavia, CEE and Russia & CIS regions.

Titles included in the deal for Viasat History include Forsake Places (4 x 50 minutes), Planet of Treasures (6 x 50 minutes, pictured), Ancient Apocalypse (6 x 50 minutes), Myths: The Greatest Mysteries of Humanity (10 x 50 minutes), Crime Scene: Antiquity (5 x 50 minutes) and season two of Ancient Superstructures (3 x 50 minutes).

Meanwhile, Africa’s Hunters of the Night (1 x 50 minutes) and Scandinavia’s Hidden Paradises (1 x 50 minutes) are included for Viasat Nature. 10 further library titles have been acquired for Viasat History in Russia & CIS.

Tegna launches Quest streaming app

Tegna launched a streaming app for Quest, a 24/7 adventure and exploration multicast network.

The ad-supported free streaming service offers on-demand programming from a catalog of factual entertainment, science, history and engineering programs. The Quest app is available on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android and iOS.

Series that are available to stream on the app include The Aviators, Scrap kings, Mayday, Huge Moves, Monster Moves, Giant Lobster Hunters, Chasing Monsters and Aussie Gold Hunters. More will be added in the coming months.

“The Quest app offers a first-class, totally free streaming experience to ensure our viewers can watch their favorite Quest series whenever and wherever they want,” said Brian Volk-Weiss, vice president, entertainment programming and multicast networks at TEGNA, in a release. “Coupled with our prior launch of the True Crime Network streaming app, this launch furthers TEGNA’s commitment to providing outstanding ad-supported entertainment products to our viewers.”

The Quest app will feature Farpoint Film’s Ice Vikings, and for the second season of the series premiering on Quest in October, Tegna will serve as a co-production partner.

BFI unveils Young Audiences Content Fund slate

The BFI unveiled its latest slate from the UK government-funded Young Audiences Content Fund, which includes some factual titles.

Factual series Breaking Bristol (w/t) was included as a new commission for E4. The 6 x 60-minute series, produced by Proper Content, is about the Bristol-based dance crew, the Dark Angels. The series follows the reigning world hip-hop champions as they work to defend their UK championship and win back-to-back gold medals at the National Dance Championships.

The series also covers the personal journeys of the dance troupe members, who also juggle full-time jobs and education with their dance. The series’ production style will highlight the group’s dance routines and rigorous training.

BFI also announced CITV’s HOW series will be recommissioned, produced by Terrific TV, for a second series. CITV also recommissioned the interactive game show Don’t Unleash the Beast, while Teen First Dates was recommissioned for E4.

The YACF has a clear remit to nurture and support the creation of distinct, high-quality content for children and young audiences to be broadcast on free-to-access platforms.

To date, the BFI says seven YACF-supported programs have been recommissioned on the strength of their performances. In its first two years of operation, the YACF has delivered 150 hours of UK-originated content that would not have otherwise been financed. In this time, £30m have been awarded to 156 projects (42 production projects and 114 development projects).

“The Government-backed YACF has been transformative for the industry, breathing life into ideas that would not have come into being without it,” said Jackie Edwards, the head of the fund, in a release. “We’re thrilled to see Fund-supported projects being recommissioned, which speaks directly to their quality and popularity with audiences but also highlights the appetite for more content that caters for the UK’s children and young people, and the need for more resource to support its provision.
