Emilia Clarke reveals she nearly died at the start of ‘Game of Thrones’

On screen we see her as the powerful and strong Daenerys Targaryen, mother of dragons and who after seven seasons of the series Game of Thrones, is about to finally occupy the iron throne.

In real life, Emilia Clarke (the actress who plays her) has also had to face two battles that almost cost her her life. According to a rehearsal published by the magazine New Yorker -–Titled A battle for my life (a battle for my life) – It was about two aneurysms that had to be treated in an emergency.

At the end of filming the first season, in 2011, Emilia He was in the gym when his life changed in a second: “On the morning of February 11 I was getting dressed… when I started to feel that a severe headache was coming. I felt so exhausted that I could hardly put my tennis shoes on. When I started training, I had to force myself to complete the first exercises, “said the actress.

As he did a series of planks, he began to feel as if an elastic band were tightening his brain. And although the actress tried to ignore it, she couldn’t and had to stop. Then he almost crawled to the bathroom where after vomiting the pain worsened. “At one point I knew what was happening: my brain was damaged.”

A woman who was in the next bathroom asked her if she was okay and after helping her called the ambulance. “Then everything became blurry. I remember the sound of an ambulance; I heard voices, someone saying that my pulse was weak ”.

When he arrived at the hospital, no one knew what was wrong with him and it was until an MRI scan that they discovered what his condition was: “I had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture. I found out later that about a third of patients with it die immediately or shortly thereafter. Survivors need emergency treatment to seal the aneurysm, as there is a high risk of a second hemorrhage, which is generally fatal ”.

If he wanted to live and avoid irreversible consequences, there was only one way out: to have an operation immediately, and even then, no one guaranteed that he would look good.

“I remember that they told me that I had to sign a consent for the operation. Brain surgery? I was in the middle of my very busy life, I didn’t have time for brain surgery. ” Finally Emilia, then 24 years old, signed and entered the operating room.

Upon exiting the surgery (which lasted three hours), Emilia he remembers that he did not know where he was and his field of vision was restricted. Four days later, a nurse asked him his name (Emilia Isobel Euphemia Rose Clarke), and she couldn’t remember it, which put her in a panic.

“I had never experienced fear like that. I could see my life forward and that way it was not worth living. actress , I need to remember my lines and now I couldn’t even remember my name ”. It was an episode known as aphasia, a language disorder caused by the trauma his brain suffered from the operation.

A month after the surgery, he finally got out of the hospital; in a few weeks he had to return to the set of Game of ThronesBut there was something that worried him: they had detected a smaller aneurysm on the other side, which could burst at any moment.

Under strict medical surveillance Emilia He went back to work, although he constantly had headaches and was sometimes very weak. For this reason, season 2 of the series was the most difficult for her.

Two years later, in 2013, he did a play on Broadway. Taking advantage of his medical insurance, he went to have a brain scan (something that was done regularly by then) and that was how he discovered that this other aneurysm had doubled in size.

Shortly after he returned to the operating room … and the operation failed. He had a massive hemorrhage. “The doctors told me that my chances of survival were very slim unless I had another operation right away, right away.” Unlike her first surgery, which was non-invasive, this second was old-fashioned, that is, they had to open her skull. Recovery was more painful and slow, as a piece of the skull was also replaced by a titanium plate.

Another month passed and she was finally discharged. After those two traumatic experiences, Emilia He decided to dedicate much of his free time to an association, SameYou, dedicated to treating people recovering from injuries and strokes.
