Today’s bulletin, December 27, 2021

Thirteen thousand cases in four days: this is the very heavy balance of the pandemic in Emilia-Romagna in the days of Christmas. A clear sign that the variante Omicron it is spreading, rapidly multiplying the infections. Which, however, at least at the moment, are not translating into an equally rapid increase in serious cases, confirming what is being observed everywhere: namely that the Omicron variant is more contagious, but less heavy and that vaccinations offer a shield for forms more serious.

In fact, 3,482 new positives were recorded in the last 24 hours, identified on the basis of about 23 thousand swabs. This is one of the highest figures ever since the start of the pandemic, very slightly lower than that of Christmas Day. There are also 14 other victims: among them there are a 54-year-old woman who died in the province of Ravenna and a 63-year-old woman in that of Forlì-Cesena. Among the new positives the mean age is 36.1 years and 1,355 are asymptomatic. The province of Bologna, with 857 cases, is the one, in absolute terms, with the highest numbers, followed by Modena (727) and Rimini (412).

At the moment the increase in the number of hospitalized remains limited, which in fact is the decisive parameter for placing the region in the yellow zone. in intensive care there are in fact 107 patients like yesterday, while in the other Covid departments there are 1,236 hospitalized (49 more than yesterday). But above all, the percentage is growing (reaching 98.3%) positives who are in isolation at home because they don’t need hospital care. However, we run for cover to prevent the next New Year from multiplying the infections: after the ban on access to Piazza Maggiore ordered by the Municipality of Bologna, and the government’s decision to close the discos (however, increasing the fear for increase in private parties more difficult to control) Ferrara too has decided to cancel the fire of the Castle, the show that traditionally greets the new year that will not take place, neither with the public nor without an audience.

The government decree of December 24 in fact prohibits all events that can cause gatherings in open spaces. In recent days, the initiative had been at the center of a tug-of-war between the Municipality and the Prefecture. Initially, the presence of the public was forbidden, a decision contested by the mayor Alan Fabbri who had demanded a new call of the table in light of the measures that would be taken by the government.
